It Is 3 A.M. Here and Breakfast There: A Good Morning Worth Waiting For

The tea at my elbow has gone from scalding to sensible, which means I have been sitting here for forty minutes pretending to work. The window shows me a street the colour of wet slate and one lit window across the way, some other insomniac, some other lamp. On the second clock, the one I keep set an hour wrong on purpose so it feels like a secret, it is breakfast. Somewhere, a person is reaching for the light switch.

I know the ritual by heart now. First the groan, which I have never heard but can reconstruct from the pause before the first message. Then the glasses, or no glasses, a squint at the phone, a thumb moving before the brain has finished booting. I love that stretch of minutes more than I can decently say. You are not yet performing a day. You are just soft, rumpled, honest.

So I wait. This is the part nobody puts on the postcards: the waiting has a texture. It is not empty. It is like standing outside a bakery before it opens, smelling what is coming, perfectly content to be cold for a little longer because the cold is part of the appetite. I rehearse my first line and throw it out. Too eager. I rehearse another. Too casual, a lie.

What I settle on is usually small. Something about the steam on your side of the planet and the dark on mine, how we are drinking the same hour from opposite ends of the cup. You will answer with crumbs in your sentence. I will be able to tell what you are eating by the typos. Toast, I think, with that dark jam you pretend is too sweet.

Then the message lands and the whole clumsy machinery of time zones simply stops mattering for a minute. My 3 a.m. gets a sunrise. Your breakfast gets a night. If you want to hear how I actually say good morning, voice and all, I am on TheFriend, usually awake, usually holding something warm.

Come hear the good morning I save for the people who wait for it. I am on TheFriend, tea in hand, and I will say it softly.
